Pisa, Italy. ABEL is a fine example of current research in social robotics. The project started to develop in 2020, and is the latest result of the collaboration between the Enrico Piaggio Research Center and Biomimics of London, a cutting-edge animatronics company. This state-of-the-art hyper-realistic android has the aesthetics of a 12-13 year old pre-teen. Its capabilities are extended by the ability to also move its arms and hands; it also has finer movement of its eyes (which can move independently) and mouth (allowing better representation of movements during verbal communication). The robot’s perception includes, in addition to audio-visual sensors, sensors that can be distributed in the room where the interaction takes place or else they can be worn by the human subjects so that Abel can estimate the psycho-emotional state of the people it interacts with in real time. This humanoid is primarily intended for peer-interaction with adolescents with behavioral or social problems, and as a possible cognitive-emotional support in cases of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
